What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a gentle, Japanese technique for stress reduction, relaxation, and mind–body awareness. At Joyflow, Reiki is offered as a supportive, non-invasive practice that helps calm the nervous system and invite balance on physical, emotional, and energetic levels.

The word Reiki comes from two Japanese terms:
• Rei – often described as universal wisdom, higher guidance, or the greater whole
• Ki – life force energy, the vital energy that flows through all living things

Reiki is based on the idea that when life force energy is flowing freely, we feel more grounded, resilient, and at ease. When that energy feels depleted or blocked, we may experience stress, fatigue, or emotional imbalance.

Reiki is not a religion and is not affiliated with any spiritual belief system. It is a complementary wellness practice that can be experienced by people of all backgrounds.

Why try Reiki?

Reiki
for
Children

Reiki can be a gentle, supportive practice for children, just as it is for adults. At Joyflow, Reiki for kids is offered as a non-invasive, calming experience designed to support relaxation, nervous system regulation, and a sense of safety and ease.

Children often experience stress and overwhelm in ways that look different from adults. Big emotions, anxiety, sensory overload, difficulty settling the body, or changes in routine can all affect a child’s sense of balance.

Many families explore Reiki as a complementary wellness practice for children navigating anxiety, ADHD, autism, sensory sensitivity, or periods of transition. Reiki does not diagnose or treat conditions, but it may help support relaxation, emotional regulation, and grounding when used alongside medical, therapeutic, and educational supports.

What happens during a child's Reiki session?

Children remain fully clothed and may lie down, sit, or move as needed. Sessions are intentionally kept short, about 15 to 30 minutes, to match a child’s attention span and comfort level. The practitioner gently places hands on or just above the body, always guided by consent and the child’s cues. There is no pressure, manipulation, or requirement to stay still or talk about feelings.

What might my child experience?

Every child’s experience is different. Some children feel warmth, calm, or deep relaxation. Others may feel sleepy, grounded, or simply enjoy having a quiet, regulated space. Some children may not notice specific sensations at all. There is no “right” way to experience Reiki.

How does Reiki fit into my child's care?

Reiki is not a replacement for medical care, therapy, or educational supports. Many families choose to use Reiki as a complementary practice alongside other professional services as part of a holistic approach to well-being. If your child benefits from calm, predictable environments and gentle, respectful support, Reiki may be worth exploring.
Reiki for children, like Reiki for adults, is an invitation, a pause, a breath, and a moment to reconnect with calm and balance.

Safety, Consent, & Support

Reiki is gentle and non-invasive. At Joyflow, children’s sessions are trauma-informed, flexible, and child-led. Children are always in control of their bodies and may ask questions, request changes, or stop the session at any time. Sessions are adapted to each child’s sensory needs, communication style, and comfort level.

Parents and caregivers are welcome to discuss ahead of time whether remaining nearby or in the room would feel most supportive for their child. This is determined collaboratively, based on the child’s age and needs.
